About Our Infant Program
Mariposa provides a warm, loving and inviting environment where children learn, grow and prepare for new challenges and experiences. The teachers will bond, read and play with the children. Through each of these interactions, teachers will help your child grow and develop fundamental skills appropriate for their age. Our program focuses on the developmental categories listed below. Some example milestones for each category have been provided as well.
0-1 Years of Age
- Social and Emotional
- Copies movements and facial expressions, like smiling
- Plays with others
- Plays games such as “peek-a-boo” and “pat-a-cake”
- Language/Communication
- Turns head toward sounds
- Babbles with expression and copies sounds he/she hears
- Responds to simple spoken requests
- Cognitive
- Begins to follow things with eyes and recognize people at a distance
- Shows curiosity about things and tries to get things that are out of reach
- Explores things in different ways, like shaking, banging, throwing
- Movement/Physical
- Can hold head up and begins to push up when lying on tummy
- Rolls over in both directions (front to back, back to front)
- Pulls up to stand, walks holding on to furniture (“cruising”)
1-2 Years of Age
- Social and Emotional
- Plays simple pretend, such as feeding a doll
- Gets excited when with other children
- Plays mainly beside other children, but is beginning to include other children, such as in chase games
- Language/Communication
- Says several single words
- Says sentences with 2 to 4 words
- Points to things in a book
- Cognitive
- Scribbles on his/her own
- Builds towers of 4 or more blocks
- Names items in a picture book such as a cat, bird, or dog
- Movement/Physical
- Drinks from a cup
- Begins to run
- Makes or copies straight lines and circles
